The Santa Cruz Forest Reserve is an excellent location for those looking for a non-touristy Amazon rainforest experience. There is no slick lodge with a bar and entertainment and no domesticated “wild” animals, but you do have the freedom to roam some 30 km of trails by day or night, or just find a place to sit and relax.
As Santa Cruz is only ~2 hours travel time from the city of Iquitos, so it is ideal for those with limited time, a limited budget, or whose schedules don’t permit them to travel with a larger group. We do have a minimum 3-night stay requirement, but we can accept single travelers, families, and small groups. Most dates will be open unless there is a large group scheduled to use the facilities.
Just send us your preferred dates or range of potential dates and number of participants, and we can get back to you with availability and a quote. If you need airport pickup / dropoff in Iquitos, or hotel reservations, we can do that for you as well. At the field station you would be accompanied by our station director who is an excellent animal finder, as well as a cook. Accommodations are in rustic but comfortable 2 to 4-person tambos (screened, elevated structures) overlooking an artificial lake which is a wildlife hotspot. At night the chorus of frogs can be almost deafening, so if you are a light sleeper, bring earplugs. All linens are provided - there is no need to bring bedding or towels. Close to the accommodations are flush toilets and showers (no hot water, but the cool water will feel very refreshing after a hike!).
Santa Cruz is easily accessible year-round, unlike some of our other sites which have very limited, or no access during the September-November dry season. If you have limited time, have a limited budget, or just want peace and quiet for writing, photography, art, or mere serenity, this could be the place for you.
